JointFit – A Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis Program

With approximately 3.9 million Canadians living with osteoarthritis (OA), current evidence suggests that patient exercise and education are the two best ways to manage OA. Based on the most current Clinical Practice Guideline from the Journal of Orthopaedic Sports Physical Therapy in 2017, individualized flexibility, strengthening and endurance exercise has Grade A evidence as treatment interventions for patients with hip osteoarthritis.

Together with our sports medicine physician Dr. Kameron Bazmi, our physiotherapy team has developed a program to target improving joint flexibility, strengthening muscles surrounding affected joints, and improving overall function and physical well-being.

What is JointFit?

JointFit is an evidence-based exercise program for individuals with hip and knee OA. There will be an initial assessment at the beginning, six weeks of exercise classes, educational sessions, and an optional follow up appointment at the end. Tests will be done at the assessment and again at the end of the program to see what functional gains have been made. The program will be exclusively run by a Physiotherapist.

Why participate in this program?

The program will target improving joint flexibility, strengthening muscles surrounding affected joints, as well as improving overall function and physical well-being. Again, exercise is the highest grade evidence for treatment options for individuals with OA! The goal is to help people get moving and back to all the activities they love to do.

How much does the program cost?

The JointFit program is a more affordable option for patients living with OA. The initial assessment is 30 minutes long and is $75. The exercise classes are an hour long each and are $60 each. We recommend committing to the entire program of 6 weeks which is offered at a reduced rate of $50/session if bundled together.

How many people are in each class?

Exercise classes will have up to four participants total. Assessments will be completed individually prior to beginning the program.

Who teaches the classes?

Classes will be instructed by one of our physiotherapists, who have years of experience assessing and treating individuals with OA.

Will the program be covered by my extended health benefits?

Yes! Because you are being followed by a registered physiotherapist, JointFit is covered by health insurance under physiotherapy services.
